Posture and gait

Every supermodel walks the same way.

Feet almost straight, narrow track, one foot placed nearly in front of the other. It gets taught as a runway trick, and it is actually the visible signature of a body organised correctly from the ground up.

Back chain dominance means the glutes, hamstrings and the muscles along the spine are what move us, rather than the quads and hip flexors at the front. Every elite athlete has it, every animal in nature has it, and so does almost everyone who reads as naturally well put together.

There is a simple check. Walking normally, we should feel the glutes switching on with every step. Most of us feel the front of the thighs instead.

When the posterior chain goes quiet, everything above it compensates, and that compensation carries upward until it reaches the neck and the jaw.

What it looks like from outside

A clean gait is a signal of a working body.

Supermodels, sprinters and big cats all move through the posterior chain, and they share the same four mechanics.

The runway walk is the pattern, not a performance of it.

A clean gait says the fascia is intact, the skeleton is stacked and the glutes are firing. We are hardwired to notice that, and we call what we notice beauty.

How it went missing

Nobody taught us how to walk

We learned by copying the people around us, inherited their mechanics, and then rehearsed those mechanics several million times.

For most of human history the environment did the coaching. Barefoot, on uneven ground, which forced the toes to spread, the big toe to anchor and the arch to work like a spring. Flat pavements, cushioned shoes with narrow toe boxes and a great deal of sitting have quietly removed all of it.

The pattern is still being rehearsed. It is simply rehearsing something else.

How far it travels

From the arch of the foot to the jaw.

This is the chain that surprises people, and the reason we spend time on feet when the subject appears to be the face.

  • The arch collapses and the foot rolls inward
  • The shin rotates in, so the leg turns out to compensate
  • The feet flare outward and the knees fall inward
  • The pelvis offsets and the hip stops extending
  • The pelvis drifts forward and the lower back compensates
  • The ribcage flares and the upper back stiffens
  • The head travels forward of the shoulders
  • The airway narrows and nasal breathing gets harder

It feeds itself. The gait affects the posture, the posture affects the breathing, the breathing tightens the fascia, and tighter fascia makes the gait harder to change. This is why posture work alone can run for months and feel like very little. The habit underneath it was still running for the other fifteen hours of the day.

The mechanics

Walking is a spiral.

Every step transmits force from the foot up through the shin, thigh, pelvis and spine. Done properly it feels elastic rather than effortful.

  • The heel is placed rather than dropped
  • Weight rolls forward into the midfoot
  • The knee holds a slight outward bow
  • The back heel flicks gently outward on the way off
  • The big toe leaves the ground last, and does the pushing
  • Shoulders and pelvis counter-rotate with each step

The outward bow at the knee is the detail that gets missed. Told to point the toes forward, most of us let the knee fall inward instead, which is the opposite of what we want.

The back leg matters as much as the front. Propulsion comes from the leg behind us extending and pushing off through the big toe. It is the same pattern a baby uses crawling.

Cues worth holding through the day

  • Feet forward, or turned very slightly inward
  • Arch lifted, big toe anchored into the ground
  • A slight outward bow at the knee
  • The tongue resting on the roof of the mouth

Where the chain begins

The foot is what wakes the glute.

When the big toe anchors and the arch lifts, the tendon along the front of the shin engages, and that is what reconnects the foot to the glute above it. When the foot collapses, the connection never fires. A glute cannot switch on properly if the foot underneath it has given up.

This is also where a good deal of asymmetry begins. If one foot collapses more than the other, that side rotates differently, the pelvis shifts, the head tilts slightly and the jaw seats unevenly. Over years that becomes chewing more on one side, and a visible difference between the two halves of the face.

A common misunderstanding

A tilted pelvis is a symptom.

Almost everybody carries some forward pelvic tilt, and a great deal of effort gets spent attacking it directly. The more useful question is what is holding it there.

With the front of the body dominant, tight quads and hip flexors drag the pelvis forward and the lower back over-arches to keep us upright. With the back of the body dominant, the pelvis can sit slightly forward and it is being held there rather than dragged there. A little tilt is not the problem. Being pulled into it is.

Which is why order matters. Release the fascia, build the back chain, sort the breathing, get the tongue onto the roof of the mouth, and the pelvis settles where it belongs without ever being addressed directly.

How we train it

Release, stretch, strengthen.

In that order, with the back of the body prioritised over the front at every stage.

Strengthen behind

Hip thrusts and glute bridges, Romanian deadlifts, back extensions, and work for the back of the neck, which decides where the head sits.

Release the front

The static back position to let the pelvis reset, hanging to decompress the spine, and stretching the quads and hip flexors pulling everything forward.

Rebuild the feet

Barefoot where practical, wide toe box and thin soles otherwise, towel scrunches, ankle work, and walking uphill, which points the feet inward on its own.

Restore the spiral

Club and mace swings teach movement through recoil rather than strain. Walking backwards works because none of us ever trained a bad habit in reverse.

None of it counts for much if the walking stays the same. The exercises take perhaps forty minutes a week. The thousands of steps taken every day are what actually reshape the body.

Walk properly whenever it crosses your mind. That alone starts rebuilding the pattern, and it costs nothing.
